by John Judge, 1982

The assets of Jim Jones’ People’s Temple have yet to be fully accounted, but early research in the press and by independent investigators put the total between $26 million and $2 billion. Following the money leads down a twisted trail of international banks, dummy fronts, real estate investments and conflicting government reports. Various sources estimate a total of at least $17-$20 million in foreign investments, and property worth $2.5 million that passed through deed, sale and ownership from 1976 to 1979. Some $12 million dollars was deposited in mysterious accounts in Panama.

During the recent scandal involving the Vatican Bank, Bank Ambrosiana and deceased Italian financier Roberto Calvi, information surfaced indicating that some of the siphoned millions went to Panamanian (more…)

FBI/Justice Claims of Discontinued Use Leave Questions Unanswered
Britain and Germany in the Lurch?
Did bin Laden Use It To Break White House Codes And Threaten Air Force One?

An October 16 FOX News report by correspondent Carl Cameron indicating that convicted spy, former FBI Agent Robert Hanssen, had provided a highly secret computer software program called Promis to Russian organized crime figures – who in turn reportedly sold it to Osama bin Laden – may signal a potential intelligence disaster for the United States. Admissions by the FBI and Justice in the FOX story that they have discontinued use of the software are most certainly a legal disaster for a government that has been engaged in a 16-year battle with the software’s creator, William Hamilton, CEO of the Inslaw Corporation. Over those 16 years, in response to lawsuits filed by Hamilton charging that the government had stolen the software from Inslaw, the FBI, the CIA and the Department of Justice have denied, in court and under oath, ever using the software. Related imageWHAT IS PROMIS AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
By Michael C. Ruppert, From the Wilderness

PROMIS stands for Prosecutor’s Management Information System.

In the late 1970s the legal system of the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) was comprised of more than thirty semi-autonomous regional U.S. Attorneys (USA) offices. Each had a computer system to track case management for prosecutions, investigations, and civil litigations. The problem was that they used as many as seven different programming languages. This made the transmission and sharing of information between offices virtually impossible. The computers in the USA’s office in San Francisco could not read files sent from the USA in New York.

The genius of Hamilton and Inslaw was to create a software program that could access files in any number of databases and programming languages and translate and then unify them into one consistent file. Promis was the Rosetta stone of computer languages. (more…)

MOORER DEPOSITION IN TAILWIND SUITS CONFIRMS ALLEGATIONS OF SARIN USE AGAINST VIETNAM DEFECTORS, POWS – INCRIMINATES CIA, KISSINGER

From The Wilderness has obtained the January 17 deposition of retired Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer taken in connection with a “batch” of civil suits filed in the aftermath of 1997 and 1998 CNN reports relating to a series of 1970 CIA directed missions known as “Tailwind.” Those missions, as originally, and apparently accurately, reported by CNN involved the use of the poison nerve gas Sarin to kill American defectors in Laos. The Moorer deposition not only confirms all of the aspects of the original CNN broadcast, it also suggests that former CNN Producers April Oliver and Jack Smith may have actually understated the extent of Sarin Gas use by U.S. forces under CIA control during the Vietnam war. After several failed efforts to unseat Venezuela’s popular President Hugo Chavez, the fuel sector of corporate America is getting nervous. Venezuela is growing in prosperity, relying on its own mineral resources and technological patents to build new wealth. Chavez is exactly the kind of indigenous national leader whom American power can’t tolerate.

Arbenz, Mossadegh, Allende, and the other names on that too-familiar list were deposed for the crime of using their countries’ own resources to enrich the general population. More recently, Aristide moved a few inches in that direction and found himself miles from home. Even as Venezuela consolidates its position on the global oil chessboard, American law-and-order rhetoric is less and less credible.

The old script goes like this: U.S. corporations expropriate third world wealth; a democratic leader then nationalizes that wealth; the US then cries “property rights!” and invades said country in the name of international law. But Iraq is tearing that script to shreds at every point, and the Venezuela story is unfolding in what may prove to be a new narrative for the world — or a particularly bitter replay of the old one. –JAH (more…)

Part 1 Here

Class and Complexity in Haiti

In this part of the world, it never pays to be intellectually lazy on these issues. They’re tricky.

Haiti has two predominant ruling classes, one based on land and one based on money. Duvalier’s base was among the landed class that exploited peasants in a sharecropping system. Their dominance was challenged by the mechanized capitalist form of agriculture that was imposed on much of the island in conjunction with the 19-year US Marine occupation of Haiti from 1915-1934. This accounts for Duvalier’s hostility to the US, which was only resolved when both Duvalier and the US were alarmed by a leftist uprising in Haiti. Duvalier massacred the communists, and from then on the US and Papa Doc were on fine terms. 9http://www .iacenter.org/haiti/ray-intv.htm)

But the class of cosmopolitans in Haiti who have survived through international trade sought the lowest price for export crops grown on these tenant plots, while the big landowners sought the highest price, (more…)

Stan Goff exposes the underlying forces driving the current crisis in Haiti. The recent coup d’etat is only the latest in two centuries of violent transfers of power in that country – but today the regional balance of forces is refreshingly new. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has foiled a series of desperate CIA attempts to gain control of that oil-producing nation.

While the Bush administration arrogantly plays the same the old game in the same old way, using the same old felons and convicted murderers, new rules are being written by an awakening transnational solidarity in the hemisphere. Markets, privatization of natural resources, drug routes, cheap labor – all are at stake in the US elite’s scramble for Haiti. But Goff shows how an even more important motivation is stinging the Bush junta into frenzied action: when white supremacy is symbolically wounded, others have to bleed. (more…)
